The Jeep Renegade has been a recognizable choice in the compact SUV market since its debut in 2014. Known for its unique styling and off-road ability, it attracted both city drivers and adventure seekers.

However, recent news left many fans asking: Is the Jeep Renegade coming back? Let’s explore its current status, the reasons behind its pause, and what the future may hold for this small but mighty SUV.

The Current Status Of The Jeep Renegade

In early 2024, Jeep announced that the Renegade would be discontinued in the United States after the 2023 model year. This decision surprised many, as the Renegade had built a loyal following. Jeep’s official statement explained that the model would still be available in some international markets, but not in North America.

Here’s a quick look at the Renegade’s journey in the US:

YearUS Sales (Units)Key Updates
201560,946US Debut
201897,062Peak Sales
202327,549Discontinued in US

The drop in sales over the last few years played a big role in Jeep’s decision. As consumer preferences shifted, competition in the small SUV segment grew stronger.

Why Did Jeep Pause The Renegade In The Us?

Several factors led to the Renegade’s exit from the American market. Understanding these helps explain if a comeback is possible.

  • Declining Sales: As shown in the sales table, interest in the Renegade dropped by over 70% from its peak. Buyers started favoring larger SUVs or newer competitors.
  • Changing Consumer Tastes: US drivers now prefer bigger vehicles, like the Jeep Compass or the Grand Cherokee. The small, boxy Renegade became less popular.
  • Emission and Efficiency Rules: Stricter US regulations on fuel economy and emissions make it harder for automakers to keep smaller, less efficient models profitable.
  • Jeep’s New Focus: The company is now investing in electric vehicles (EVs) and updating its lineup. Models like the electric Wagoneer S are taking the spotlight.

A less obvious reason is that the Renegade, while affordable, often competed with used versions of larger, better-equipped Jeeps. This made it a tough sell for new buyers.

Is The Jeep Renegade Coming Back?

The big question remains: will we see the Renegade again in the US? As of now, Jeep has not announced an official return. However, several clues suggest a comeback is possible in a new form.

Global Sales And Updates

Outside the US, the Renegade continues to sell well, especially in Europe and South America. In some countries, Jeep has introduced hybrid and plug-in hybrid Renegade models, which meet stricter emission standards.

RegionPowertrain OptionsAvailability
EuropeHybrid, Plug-in HybridOngoing
South AmericaGasoline, Flex-FuelOngoing
United StatesGasoline (Discontinued)Ended 2023

Jeep’s continued support abroad shows the Renegade is not gone for good globally.

Electric And Hybrid Possibilities

Jeep has made clear plans to expand its EV lineup. The success of hybrid Renegades in Europe could inspire Jeep to bring a new, electrified Renegade to the US. This would meet new emission laws and fit changing buyer interests. Industry rumors suggest Jeep is working on a fully electric version, though nothing is confirmed.

What Would A Return Look Like?

If the Renegade returns, expect major changes:

  • Electric or Hybrid Only: To meet rules and market demands.
  • Updated Styling: Keeping the rugged Jeep look, but more modern.
  • Advanced Tech: Better infotainment, safety features, and connectivity.
  • More Efficiency: Likely to offer better range or mileage than before.

A return would likely depend on how well Jeep’s other EVs perform in the US market.

How Does The Renegade Compare To Competitors?

The Renegade carved a niche as a small SUV with true off-road capability, something rare in its class. Here’s a quick comparison with popular rivals:

ModelBase Price (2023)HorsepowerOff-Road Package?
Jeep Renegade$28,445177 hpYes (Trailhawk)
Honda HR-V$24,100158 hpNo
Chevy Trax$20,400137 hpNo
Subaru Crosstrek$23,645152 hpYes

The Renegade was one of the few with a real off-road package (Trailhawk), making it a favorite for adventure lovers. Still, its higher price and lower fuel economy compared to rivals hurt its mainstream appeal.

Non-obvious Insights For Jeep Fans

Many fans expect a simple return, but automakers rarely bring back a model in the same form. If the Renegade comes back, it will likely be very different—possibly sharing parts or technology with other brands under the Stellantis group (Jeep’s parent company). Another missed detail is the importance of fleet and rental sales; the Renegade was popular with fleets, but private buyers are more important for long-term success.

What Should Shoppers Do Now?

If you want a new Renegade, act fast. Some 2023 models may still be available at dealerships. For those seeking a small Jeep with off-road skills, consider the Jeep Compass or wait for future EV releases. Watching international news from Jeep can give clues about upcoming US models.

  1. We really like our 2015 Renegade, but cargo space and rear seat legroom are actually too small. I’d like to see JEEP lengthen the chassis by maybe 10 – 12 inches & improve fuel efficiency. The fuel tank needs to be expanded to 16 – 17 US gallons. It also should have a spare tire, but these things will add overall gross weight. It’s a GREAT grocery getter and is really decent as a soccer-mom transporter with all-wheel drive capability for winter conditions. We see so many Renegades on our streets here in W PA. The bright color choices are magnificent!

  2. Ronald, thank you for sharing your real-world experience with your 2015 Renegade! You make a valid point about the trade-offs in packaging. The Renegade’s short wheelbase (101 inches) is great for navigating tight parking spaces and tackling off-road angles, but it does compromise rear legroom and cargo depth compared to models like the Compass.

I also find your comment about the fuel tank size interesting. The 2015 Renegade only holds 12.7 gallons, which feels quite limited compared to its competitors. A larger tank would definitely improve highway range, though I understand that it might add weight and reduce payload capacity.

The issue with the spare tire has been a concern for many owners as well. Most trims come with either a compact spare or run-flat tires, depending on the package, neither of which is ideal for a vehicle marketed as capable off-road.

It’s great to hear that your Renegade is serving you well as a daily driver. The all-wheel-drive system is genuinely effective in winter conditions, and it sounds like your vehicle is living up to its role as the family hauler. I appreciate you sharing your ownership insights; this kind of detail is helpful for other Renegade owners and potential buyers to understand what to expect.
